| Frequently Asked Questions
What does El i si mean?
El i si is a Cherokee word meaning grandmother.
In Indigenous cultures, it is the Grandmothers or Wise Women (Elders) who are the Healers. My family calls me Lisi & when I learned French at school I wanted to be called Elise because it was much more elegant than Lisa so what better name than El i si?
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
TCM is a centuries old way of treating the body as a whole. One aspect looks for imbalances in one of the Five Elements; Metal, Water, Wood, Fire & Earth. Each of these supports but also controls each other, so if one is out of balance, it stands to reason that they’re all out of balance. Once the key imbalance has been identified, steps are taken to tonify or calm the appropriate meridian.
What are meridians?
Meridians are the invisible channels that carry the Qi (see below) through our bodies. Each meridian corresponds to an organ of the body. There are two meridians, one Yin, one Yang, for each of the Five Elements with the exception of Fire which has four meridians.
What is Qi?
Qi, Chi, Ki or Prana is the life force energy that flows through our bodies via the meridians (see above)
What are Pressure Points?
Pressure Points are located along the meridians & are used to stimulate or tonify the movement of Qi.
Do I need to remove my clothes?
Massage & Hot Stone Massage require access to the skin so you will be asked to strip down to what’s comfortable for you. This is usually down to your underwear. If you wish to keep your bra on, it will need to be undone for the back massage. You will be covered by towels during the massage with only the area being massaged uncovered. Reflexology requires access to the lower legs so loose trousers or a skirt are recommended.
All other treatments are done fully clothed.
Will the Hot Stone Massage burn me?
The stones need to be quite hot to be effective; however, placement stones (those left on the body) will always be placed over a towel or sheet. If they become too hot, extra padding is placed between them & the skin. The stones used for massage are also hot but initially the moves are fairly rapid so the heat does not stay in one place. It is only when they have cooled down that slower, deeper moves are used.
